Ops'n'Tops ride the storm.

In spite of a forecast which threatened a wash-out, Ops'n'Tops, (our Saturday kid's club) braved the weather and launched under sparkling rain-washed skies. After an initial trip in one of the Wayfarers, the conditions eased and the Oppies were soon scooting about, ably supervised by Alan and Andy. The kids came ashore just ahead of a downpour and were safely in the clubhouse with the traditional hot chocolate and home -made cake before the storm burst. The first afloat on what turned out to be a brilliant family focussed weekend, they went home tired but happy, vowing to come back for more sailing fun next week.

Special thanks are due to Andy Ratcliffe and Alan Ainsworth, and to Mark Barrowcliffe for cleaning and preparing the boats.

Recognised Teaching Establishment

The club has been RTE status to teach Windsurfing. This accreditation supplements our current accreditation for the teaching of dinghy sailing.

Norah and Martin Ashby-Smith led our presentation to the RYA assessor Mike Roberts.  Martin will be the Chief Instructor for the windsurfing arm of the club’s RTE, with support from a number of members who are planning to train as instructors. It is anticipated we will be in a position to offer formal RYA courses from next spring.

Well done to all who have contributed to this success.

UKWA Windsurf Racing - 7 October 2007produc2

The UKWA travelling series visited Clowbridge this weekend.  Light winds meant that carefully judged racing was the order of the day and those with the light wind technique came out on top.

Five of our members dusted off their race boards and pitted their skills against the regular sailors and a good day in the sun was enjoyed by all.  See the 2007 series results here.

It also provided valuable practice to our recent powerboaters.

Power Boat Level 2 Course 27&28 Sept 2007

This weekend the club ran another of its successful powerboat training courses.

Power Boat Instructor Eric Crowther, and Senior Instructor Tony Hibbert  organised a RYA Level Two Powerboat Course for five of our members.

This course equips one with the skills to operate powerboat on inland waters using inboard or outboard motors, and includes the following topics:

  Clothing and safety equipmentrya_powerboat_handbook-g13_jpg

Rules of the Road and the purpose of the engine Kill cord.

Launching and recovery of a powerboat.

Low speed manoeuvres & the effects of wind and tide.

Distress signals, Pre - launch checks.

High speed turns.  Man overboard drills.

This is a theory and practical course and runs over two days

Five members – Chris Dunne, Rob Bacon, Megan and Jim Green plus Margaret Forbes had loads of fun developing these new skills.

" This is the second course I have taken at Rossendale Valley Sailing Club; the first was a level two dinghy course which was excellent and this powerboat course was brilliant".

Windsurfing Technique Clinics 1, 2, 15 &16 Sept 2007

These weekend technique clinics proved very popular with members attending the clinics and non-members attending taster sessions.

During the first weekend Dave Karl, Chris, and Dave spent a windy weekend working on their beach and waterstarts, planing technique and getting to their straps.  Frank found that Clowbridge is a long way from Dahab and went home somewhat the wiser.

New member Andy Turner and four potential new members were given a taster session/indoctrination into the sport and went away happy and threatening to join.

During the second weekend our members had excellent opportunities to practice what they had learned during the clinics as the wind began to blow.  See here for report of Survival Sunday.

Many thanks to our clinicians Steve, Bob, Adam, Tony and Alan for running the clinics.

“I cracked a good dozen waterstarts this weekend and am well pleased with the progress I have made... very tired!”

Laser Open Racing July 2007

Some of the best sailors in the country visited Clowbridge and enjoyed a full day of racing in excellent wind. Three closely contested races kept the club’s race officers busy.  Officer of the Day Doug Forbes was kept on his toes controlling the very competitive racers.  The excellent wind conditions and testing courses kept the fleet of sailors on their mettle.  Club racers Alan, Tom and Andrew joined in the fun, finding the pace set by the specialist laser sailors very challenging.

DSC00018“It was hard work out there but I learned a great deal from watching the high calibre sailors.  It will benefit my own sailing.”

ALawpic

Hi - just to say thank you for today's laser event. I really enjoyed the day. Good club facilities, friendly people and a good bit of water. Even though I had quite a journey, it was worth it and would certainly come back next year if offered.”

Well done

Andy Warner

To all the members that made us so welcome on Sunday. We would just like to say thank you very much for your hospitality and letting us use your first class facilities. After the morning not looking too well with the wind and travelling from Southport we were welcomed at the club with a bacon barm and a cup of tea, a friendly chat and a tour of the sailing club and all of a sudden the wind made an appearance. So a good day had by all!!!

Thanks again to all and look forward to seeing you again”
